How to determine Abuse & Trauma
Someone who has been directly exposed to or witnessed the abuse or traumatic event(s) may be affected. Any situation in which a person feels alone and frightened may also be considered traumatic even if it does not involve physical trauma because it is the subjective response to an event that determines the impact of the trauma.
Healing from psychological and emotional trauma often involves having to process the events and feelings of the abuse and learning how to regulate emotions, rebuild trust, and develop healthier means of coping with life. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are psychotherapies that are often used during abuse and trauma work. As depression and anxiety often accompany trauma, clients may also benefit from medication management.
