Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders diagnosed in the United States. Anxiety disorder is an umbrella term that covers several different forms of this common psychiatric condition including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder 
  • Panic Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Separation Anxiety
  • Social Anxiety

Anxiety can be episodic or chronic depending on whether an individual experiences time-limited or continuous symptoms. Symptoms of anxiety are excessive to what one would likely feel in response to life stressors. These may include:

  • Worrying
  • Ruminative thoughts
  • Feeling nervous or on edge
  • Irrational fears about certain things or things in general
  • Irritability
  • Poor concentration
  • Mental apprehension
  • An exaggerated startle response
  • Dissociation

Anxiety is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as:

  • Chronic muscle tension
  • Headaches
  • Stomach upset
  • Diarrhea
  • Heart palpitations or a pounding heart
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Insomnia

Anxiety is a natural, necessary human emotion. It can motivate us to study for a test or prepare for a presentation. It can also protect us in situations that require us to be on alert such as walking to our car in a parking lot at night. Anxiety becomes a problem when its symptoms are excessive, linger beyond an immediate situation that would normally cause stress and affect our ability to function at work or school and in our relationships.

Anxiety disorders are treatable. Different types of psychotherapy, relaxation exercises, diet and lifestyle changes and sometimes medications can change your life if you struggle with an anxiety disorder.
