Understanding Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR has evolved from being considered an experimental treatment to a well-recognized form of therapy in the treatment of unresolved trauma. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process the distressing memories within therapy and change the thought and emotional patterns that accompany the memories. EMDR-trained therapists use bilateral stimulation (BLS) in the form of tapping, sounds, or light to pair the negative memories with a more positive, neutral response and insight.
EMDR-trained therapists develop a treatment plan that first assesses the client’s readiness for EMDR and ensures that the client has appropriate coping skills to handle the emotional responses inherent in this therapy. EMDR would not be indicated for clients who are unstable, self-injurious, dissociative, easily overwhelmed, or actively use drugs or alcohol.
EMDR can help clients to process painful memories in less time than traditional psychotherapies. EMDR helps clients replace negative emotions with positive images and thought patterns. It can be effective in the treatment of PTSD, trauma, fears, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, depression, low self-esteem, and performance anxiety.
