What are Addictions?
Any deeply pleasurable activity has the potential to become addictive. Sex, eating, Internet use, and video games can be considered addictive if the behavior becomes the overriding focus in a person’s life. These behaviors are often used to cope with difficult feelings and experiences.
Depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders often co-occur with dependence and addiction as the behaviors are sometimes used as a coping mechanism to “medicate” the signs and symptoms. Therapy involves assessment of family history, significant events, and psychological issues leading to dependence and teaching clients healthy ways of experiencing and managing their feelings.
